PRO 32 : Renal Failure / Kidney Diseases

Causes:

  • Acute Renal Failure (ARF): ARF can result from sudden and severe injury to the kidneys, often due to conditions such as acute tubular necrosis (ATN), severe dehydration, sudden loss of blood flow to the kidneys (ischemia), severe infections (sepsis), or certain medications/toxins.
  • Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD): CKD develops gradually over time and is often caused by conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, glomerulonephritis, polycystic kidney disease, autoimmune diseases (such as lupus), or long-term use of certain medications.
  • Other Causes: Renal failure can also result from conditions such as urinary tract obstructions, kidney stones, kidney infections, congenital kidney disorders, or certain cancers affecting the kidneys.

Symptoms:

  • Decreased Urine Output: Reduced urine production, often accompanied by changes in frequency, color, or odor.
  • Fluid Retention: Swelling in the legs, ankles, feet, face, or abdomen due to fluid buildup (edema).
  • Fatigue and Weakness: Feeling unusually tired, weak, or lethargic, even with adequate rest.
  • Shortness of Breath: Difficulty breathing, particularly when lying down, due to fluid accumulation in the lungs (pulmonary edema).
  • Nausea and Vomiting: Feeling nauseous or vomiting, often accompanied by loss of appetite.
